then dropping the last term, an operation that can be justified in terms of limits. Differential notation, in general, can be regarded as a shorthand for a formal limit argument. Still more informally, one can argue that du is small compared to u, so that the last term can be ignored at the level of approximation needed. After dropping du and dividing by du, one obtains the derivative, namely d(u)/du = 2u. Even if one regards this process as merely a heuristic procedure, it is a good one, as it always gives the correct answer for a polynomial. (Physicists are particularly good at knowing what approximations are appropriate in a given physical context. A physicist might describe du as being much smaller than the scale imposed by the physical situation, but not so small that quantum mechanics matters.) However, this procedure does not suffice for trigonometric functions. For example, we may write

Time-Discontinuous Finite Element Analysis of Two-Dimensional Elastodynamic Problems using Complex Fourier Shape Functions

This paper reformulates a time-discontinuous finite element method (TD-FEM) based on a new class of shape functions, called complex Fourier hereafter, for solving two-dimensional elastodynamic problems. These shape functions, which are derived from their corresponding radial basis functions, have some advantages such as the satisfaction of exponential and trigonometric function fields in comple...

Generalised definitions of exponential, trigonometric sine and cosine and hyperbolic sine and cosine functions are given. In the lowest order, these functions correspond to ordinary exponential, trigonometric sine etc. Some of the properties of the generalised functions are discussed. Importance of these functions and their possible applications are also considered. PACS No.: 02.30.Hq, 02.30.Gp...

Computation of Trigonometric Functions by the Systolic Implementation of the CORDIC Algorithm

Trigonometric functions are among the most useful functions in the digital signal processing applications. The design introduced in this paper computes the trigonometric functions by means of the systolic arrays. The method for computing these functions for an arbitrary angle, , is the CORDIC algorithm. A simple standard cell is used for the systolic array. Due to the fixed inputs, in some...
